I am personally, very much pro-life and do believe Roe vs. Wade was decided wrongly. This is an issue that Libertarians are largely split on and there is even a “Libertarians for Life” organization http://www.l4l.org/ and I believe very much in their efforts.
However, the real argument is at which point are we dealing with a child that should be protected under the law as having rights that must be protected at the expense of the mother’s rights. This is one of those divisive issues that will be fought until the end of time because one side or the other will never be happy with the outcome and there is too much fund-raising and need to maintain positions (jobs) in activism for all of the various organizations.
My belief is that it is very difficult for government to decide this issue but that we must protect unborn children. The power to reproduce is one of the greatest things that human beings possess and we have a responsibility to be careful with that power that we often neglect, especially at a young age.
So, ultimately, I believe Roe vs. Wade was decided wrongly. Forty percent of all abortions happen after the first trimester and those are the ones I’m most immediately concerned about. I don’t support abortion at all, but if we had to have a compromise position (that, of course, nobody would be happy with either) it is probably most pragmatic to allow a first trimester window for people to take care of their business, after which point they’ve made their choice.
We know from history that outright prohibition on anything doesn’t work but we also don’t want to risk government endorsement of a practice that so many of us find disturbing.
Ultimately, I think the goal should be to eliminate all abortions and we have to look at the best ways to do that.
